Roger "Rock" Williams < Back

Flute on "Blue Ravel" Piano Trio

Williams began playing clarinet at the age of 9 and continued to play throughout grammar school and at Pearl High School in Nashville. He went on to study at Tennessee State University in Nashville. After college, he spent four years playing with

the NORAD Air Force band. In his early 20s, he began playing saxophone, and at 26 began performing live dates.

Williams states, “The R&B scene was very strong here in Nashville in the early ‘70s, and I played a lot of shows. I also got lucky and played on a lot of sessions in the late ‘70s.”

Not only does Williams perform with creativity and excitement, he also encompasses the use of many different saxophones, clarinets and flutes in his performances, giving him wonderful sounds and textures. Among the many performers Williams has accompanied on tour are Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Razzy Bailey, The Temptations, The O’Jays, Rufus Thomas and Marshall Chapman. Over one million people heard him performing live with Razzy Bailey at the Beach Boys' Concert in Washington, D.C.

Williams can also be heard on many recordings, including those of Delbert McClinton, Natalie Cole, Razzy Bailey, Reba McEntire, Rodney Crowell, Ronnie Milsap, Shirley Caesar, Victor Wooten and many more. His own current CD, “Heart & Soul” continues to be heard across the country.
